Suikoden - 70

Verdict

Suikoden is a classic JRPG that proves great storytelling doesn’t require massive scale. Through political intrigue, memorable characters, and a unique army-building system, it delivers one of the most personal rebellion stories in RPG history.

Overview:

At first glance, Suikoden looks like a simple 90s JRPG. The graphics are modest and the world map is fairly small compared to other games of the era. But beneath that simplicity lies a game built on army building that is rivaled by none to this day.

The Good:

Suikoden tells a powerful story that can have you on the edge of your seat (Not bad for a 90s game). Recruiting the 108 stars of destiny is very rewarding, random at times, and amazing for replay ability. The party system consists of 6 players; the Main Character is always set and the other 5 are rotating. This means there are over 5 million combinations of party configurations given that 60 of the 108 recruitable members are usable in combat. The game flows quickly and there’s never a boring moment.

The Bad:

Suikoden put all of its marbles in party building and storytelling with the limitations of it’s era it under performs in combat difficulty. Its difficulty derives from gimmicks of travel back and forth running errands until the next arc is ready and very rarely are you in a position you have to replay more than once.
